Not To Stay Forever

unnamedIn April 2017 four inhabitants of Venice took me on their special walks: ones they do regularly and that have some significance for them. They spoke of memories, cruise ships, tourists, acoustics, change and beauty. I recorded our walks and then later returned alone, walking each person’s route again and this time singing my memory of the walk we took together.

Not To Stay Forever is the latest in my ongoing series Shadow-walks, which is an attempt to make a person’s traces – their shadow – audible.

Thank you to the four people who shared their walks: Flavia, Marina, Alan and Veniero.

I am very grateful to the Emily Harvey Foundation for my artist residency in Venice which gave rise to this sound work.
