Helicotrema 6

Helicotrema is a festival that presents a program of recorded audio pieces, aiming to explore the possibilities of a form of collective listening, as in the early decades of radio broadcasts.

For its sixth edition, the festival returns to Venice, thanks to the collaboration and support of several institutions that will invite to explore the city through listening occasions, open to everyone.

The program will open with a double event hosted on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 November  by Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana at the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, inspired by the themes of the exhibition “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” by Damien Hirst.

The program of the opening day will be focused on the themes of the marine worlds and of the submerged sounds and languages, investigated through two guided listening sessions followed by a live performance by Canadian composer and sound ecologist Hildegard Westerkamp.

The second day will explore the boundary between reality and fiction, featuring compositions and stories suspended between truth and deception, and a live set by South African artist James Webb.

On Wednesday, November 22, the festival will take place inside the Sale Monumentali of the Marciana National Library. For this occasion, Helicotrema collaborates with the Libro Parlato Service to present a listening session that combines contemporary sound compositions with extracts from the library’s audiobooks archive.

In order to continue the research about Italian musicians and sound theoreticians, on November 23, at the Iuav University Library, the festival will host the presentation of “Nuove geografie del suono” by Leandro Pisano, accompanied by sound interventions curated by Enrico Coniglio and Nicola Di Croce, and a conversation between sound artist Giulia Vismara and researcher Caroline Claus.

On Friday 24, Helicotrema will take place again at the Marciana National Library, and the festival will end on Saturday, November 25, with a closing party in the location that hosted the first edition of the project, the Serra dei Giardini.
